Everyday comfort / GARDEN ROOM GUIDES
Planning a garden room for winter use
For regular winter use, discuss the whole room: floor, walls, roof, glazing, draught control, ventilation and heating. The word ‘insulated’ on its own does not describe how a finished room will perform.
General guidance for England, compiled from the sources linked below. Check the requirements for your property and intended use before committing to work.
Ask for a complete specification.
Request the proposed floor, wall and roof build-ups, glazing specification and treatment of joints and openings. Insulation and draught control help retain heat; the design still needs a deliberate supply of fresh air. Ian’s final specification should be agreed for your project.
Plan around your working day.
Explain whether you will use the room for an occasional evening or a full working week. Ask how the heating will be sized and controlled, what electrical supply it needs and how the room will be warmed before use. Running costs depend on the room, the weather, your hours of use and your tariff, so no single daily figure applies to every room.
- Discuss the hours you expect to occupy the room.
- Ask how heating controls fit that routine.
- Consider desk position, glare and summer shading as well as winter warmth.
Manage moisture as well as temperature.
Condensation forms when moist air meets a sufficiently cold surface. Sealing a room without providing suitable ventilation can leave moisture trapped inside. Energy Saving Trust distinguishes controlled ventilation from unwanted draughts; a dehumidifier removes moisture but does not supply fresh air.
Look after the exterior too.
Ask for care instructions for the specified cladding, roof covering, seals and rainwater goods. Discuss access for inspection and maintenance before the room is placed close to a boundary. Report signs of water entry or persistent damp promptly so the cause can be investigated.
- Keep the product-specific maintenance instructions.
- Agree how gutters, outlets and roof edges can be inspected safely.
- Ask who to contact if a seal, finish or drainage detail needs attention.
- Avoid assuming every stain is condensation; leaks and other moisture sources need investigation.
